Rare work of Jan Kaplický unveiled to the public. Newly on display at Prague's Bastion
We have brought and installed a rare work by Jan Kaplický at the Prague Bastion. The installation called Acquae, which is part of the 10th year of the Sculpture Line project, was restored in his studio by sculptor Lukáš Rais. The forgotten nine-metre high object was discovered after 20 years in Milan, Italy, by the world-famous architect Norman Foster.
The story of Jan Kaplický's installation began more than 20 years ago. At that time, the Czech architect created it on commission for the Triennale di Milano. Here, 10 renowned architects from all over the world presented their designs for street food kiosks in collaboration with the world's leading brands. Jan Kaplický created Acquae - a giant steel drop with a space for ice at the end. The object measures 9 metres in length and 5 metres in width, the inner structure is made of laser-cut iron sheet. It thus serves as a storage counter for bottles and encourages the consumption of bottled water.
"In June we will celebrate the tenth birthday of the Sculpture Line project and I am glad that we can present this work to the general public on that occasion. Jan Kaplický was a visionary and an architect of world importance. By exhibiting Acquae we can pay tribute to him and remind his native Prague of the architect's legacy," says Ondřej Škarka, founder of the cultural institution Art Lines and the Sculpture Line project.
In addition to Acquae, we have also installed works by sculptor Jakub Flejšar at the Prague Bastion. He exhibits regularly within the Sculpture Line project and his objects in public spaces are encountered by citizens and visitors of many Czech cities, including Prague, Hradec Králové, Pardubice and Jablonec nad Nisou.
